Botany in the Blues
In this field workshop, we will facilitate a more “close-up” look at the amazing native plant diversity of the Blue Mountains. Participants will become familiar with the tools and resources needed to identify the flowers and other plants they will encounter while on their own future mountain ramblings. We will visit a variety of wildflowers, shrubs and trees and introduce some simple botanical terminology that will aid identifications. We’ll discuss how plants are categorized by modern botanists, how some of them have been used historically and in the communities in which they live. Your hosts Jeff Fredson and Cheryl Baker are passionate advocates for our native wildflowers, forests, and wildlife. Jeff has sustainably managed his property on Weston Mountain, OR, since 1992. Your Leaders are Darcy Dauble and Emil (Ame) Doyle, both active members of the Columbia Basin Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society, and and volunteers for the Rare Care Program, which monitors rare plant sites in the Blue Mountains, as well as other parts of the state, on behalf of the WA Natural Heritage Program.
